Food and Beverage Director

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club

This is a Full-time position in Toronto, ON posted January 8, 2019.

The Royal Canadian Yacht Club was founded in Toronto in 1852 to serve both as a yachting recreational club and an unofficial auxiliary of the Royal Navy in the defense of the waters of Lake Ontario. We are one of Canada’s premier sailing and social clubs, with an emphasis on family participation, the development of our junior sailors, and a Corinthian attitude towards excellence insailing. The RCYC operates year-round from two facilities: our summer home at the Island Clubhouse and our City Clubhouse in downtown Toronto. With over 4700 Members we have extensive services in Food and Beverage along with Fitness, Sports and Sailing facilities.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Food and Beverage Director is responsible for managing the Food and Beverage Department in accordance to Club standards. This individual will beaccountable for the successful day to day operations as well as leading and supporting all employees within Food and Beverage. The Food and Beverage Director is required to maintain ahigh profile with all management, employees, Members, and Guests of the Club. The incumbent must ensure that Members and Guests are satisfied with the quality of food and service that the RCYC provides. He or she must be able to handle all Member and Guest requests and complaints in a prompt and efficient manner.

Job Duties

  • Achieve and maintain highest standard levels of products and services for all Members and Guests
  • Responsible for organizing events and activities related to Food and Beverage and variousoutlets and to keep Members engaged
  • Monitor the ordering and receiving of products and supplies to ensure proper quality and quantity on all incoming purchases and inventory.
  • Handle all Food and Beverage Member and Guest issues and advise the General Managers to the appropriate corrective actions to be taken
  • Assist with marketing promotional activities and creatively promote Club events
  • Ensure that Food and Beverage menus are health focus, diverse, interesting, andadvertised to the members in a timely manner
  • Responsible for ensuring that all legal requirements are consistently adhered to withregards to licensing including alcohol purchase, storage, and service
  • Ensure that all operating procedures for revenue and expenses controls are in place andbeing utilized to their full potential
  • Maintain budgetary responsibility for revenues, expenses, and operating results goals asoutlined in the Food and Beverage budget without affecting the quality of Club products or services
  • Actively work with the Director of Finance to ensure high standards in the annual budgetprocess and expense controls
  • Assist in the direction of planning of future developments (Food and Beverage related) within the Club and its strategic plan
  • Responsible for supporting the supervisors and department managers in the recruitment, training, development, coaching, mentoring, and employee engagement
  • Conduct Coaching and Development sessions to review employee progress and areas of improvement, and perform disciplinary actions, if required Continuing education where necessary to maintain leadership practices with current trends
  • Keep up with competitors to ensure that the Club is aware of new and improved technology, products, services, and entertainment opportunities
  • Conduct weekly departmental meeting with all Food and Beverage key employees and other operational departments
  • Provide strong leadership to the Clubs Sports and Social Committee, provide them with accurate information to make sound decisions on Club matters.
  • Enforce all workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, food preparation standards and Royal Canadian Yacht Club policies and procedures
  • Conduct regular inspections of operations within the region.
  • Maintain awareness of and provide adequate responses to the needs of supervisors and front-line service teams, including induction, performance monitoring, coaching, andensuring that appropriate training is provided as required
  • Carry out administrative functions pertaining to personnel, including on-the-job training,ensuring dress code standards are followed, recruiting, interviewing, training and managingsubordinates in compliance with company and statutory procedures
  • Maintain awareness of Member and Guests needs and attend to Member and Guest complaints to achieve high satisfaction levels
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends in food preparation, techniques, and provide creativedirection in the creation of menu items
  • Perform all other tasks as assigned by the General Manager and the Club

Work Conditions

  • Frequent interactions with employees, management and Membership
  • Frequent time spent in kitchens with exposure to heat, slippery surfaces, and airborne allergens a common concern
  • Frequent travel to between the two locations (Island and City).

Salary Range: 80K-90K

General Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management orrelevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ work experience in a senior position within Food and Beverage, Hospitality, Culinary Management, preferably in a Private Membership Club setting
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in executive level interaction
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Solution-oriented approach to dealing with issues tactfully
  • Strong team building and coaching background.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in Inventory and food cost controls
  • Experience working with seasonal employees CCM designation will be considered an assest.
